Public Works Seasonal Laborer - City of Andover

Job Summary

This public works seasonal laborer performs generally unskilled manual labor in maintaining City property, streets, and facilities. Any special skills required will be on-the-job training under direct supervision. Employment within this position is generally seasonal with a limited duration of approximately 3-6 months.

1.       Mows grass and trims around structures.

2.       Various janitor duties at city facilities.

3.       Assists in repair and maintenance of City equipment and facilities.

4.       Transports tools and equipment to and from jobsites.

5.       Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Position Requirements:

Experience

1.       This is an entry level position with no prior experience required.

2.       Employee is expected to be able to learn the necessary information and skills to perform the job satisfactorily.

3.       Due to the duration (3-6 months) of the seasonal position, employee would perform basic repetitive tasks.

Education

No formal education required.

Skills          

1.       Reading and listening skills are necessary to follow instructions to learn operation of City equipment.

2.       The ability to use lawn care equipment, including mowers and string trimmers is preferred but not required.

3.      Valid Kansas driver’s license and a driving record meeting the requirements to be insurable through company insurance.

Working Conditions

Heavy manual labor is required; extreme weather conditions, working with fuels, oil, and maintenance chemicals are factors in this position. Personal protective equipment is frequently required.

Physical Requirements

The majority of the work involves physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, or push objects or equipment possibly weighing fifty pounds or more; climbing in and out of ditches; bending, stooping, and and/or shoveling as required; climbing and reaching to change light bulbs, etc.
