Restoration Assistant
The Restoration Assistant is primarily responsible for assisting the Education Coordinator & Restoration Technician in carrying out the Museum Director’s plans and designs for the Museum’s Exhibits & Programs. In this capacity he assists in the building and maintaining of exhibits, cleaning & maintaining the aircraft and the hangar area of the museum, and any other jobs as assigned by the Education Coordinator & Restoration Technician or the Director. This position may be either a full time or part time position at the discretion of the Director.
Essential Functions Include:
Perform minor repairs of aircraft & exhibits.
Help supervise volunteers & community service workers.
Mount, install, maintain, and dismantle exhibits.
Build display cases as needed.
Perform rough & finished carpentry as needed.
Clean equipment & work areas.
Empty trash cans when necessary.
Prepare and paint a variety of surfaces on the interior of the building as needed.
Interact with visitors in multiple capacities ranging from giving tours, run the admissions & gift shop cash registers as needed.
Plan and carry out special activities & events at the Museum under the direction of the Director.
Assist the Director as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Methods, practices, tools and materials used in restoration work on a variety of artifacts, and used in carpentry.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to handling artifacts, equipment, and during restoration activities.
The use and care of hand tools and power equipment necessary to perform their duties.
Operate large and small power-driven machinery such as scissor lifts, aircraft tugs, etc.
Lift arms above shoulder level to work on aircraft and other artifacts.
Be able to get down on hands and knees to work on or jack up aircraft.
Be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, long and short distances.
The ability to help manually move aircraft.
Work safely without presenting a direct threat to themselves or others.
Work Environment:
Office environment; exposure to computer screens & telephones.
Aircraft Hangar; exposure to heat & cold, dust, noise, and occasional pests.
Additional Requirements:
Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, posses a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
