Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining public safety by enforcing animal licensing laws and humane care regulations for the City of McPherson. The position offers a wage range of $17.44–$25.09, depending on qualifications and experience.
Job Competencies and Essential Job Functions

• In the absence of the Animal Shelter Director may assume responsibility to lead the Animal Shelter Technicians
• Investigates dog bite complaints and cases of cruelty to animals
• Captures stray and/or injured dogs and cats and transports to appropriate retaining area
• Traps and tranquilizes dogs when unable to utilize other methods of capture
• Prepares and monitors live animal traps as needed
• Works to resolve feral cat issues in conjunction with the McPherson Cat House
• Provides immediate care for injured animals
• Responds to calls and complaints regarding vicious, stray, and/or diseased dogs and cats
• Investigates possible code and ordinance violations as they relate to animal control
• Prepares reports for summonses
• Performs essential functions of the Animal Shelter Technician
• Maintains Department files and records and files appropriate reports
• Fields questions, concerns, and complaints from the general public
• Develops and provides training related to animal control, impound procedures, and investigation of animal abuse and neglect for Police Officers of the Department
• Provides credible testimony at any court proceeding
• Performs general clerical duties including typing, filing, and photocopying
• Enforces compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Complies with all organizational and departmental policies
• Operates required equipment/tools in a safe manner
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information (oral, written, or electronic)
• Consistent and reliable attendance is required; employees must report to work regularly, on time, and in accordance with their assigned schedule
Position Requirements and Qualifications
Education / Experience requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Technical degree or some college credit in Veterinary Medicine preferred
• Animal control and/or animal shelter related experience preferred
Licenses / Certifications:
• Valid state of Kansas driver’s license
• Animal Control Officer Certification
• Member of the Kansas Animal Control Association
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Working knowledge of tranquilizer systems, animal handling and maintenance, crematorium and drug dosage
• Ability to apprehend animals and operate department vehicles, traps, tranquilizer systems and other department equipment
• Knowledge of different breed of dogs, cats and other animals
• Strong time management and prioritization
