Job Summary
Responsible for planning and directing the operation of the Animal Shelter and Crematorium for the City of McPherson. The position offers a wage range of $23.42-$37.02 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
Job Competencies and Essential Job Functions
• Directs and supervises the impounding, release, adoption, and euthanasia of stray, diseased, unclaimed, and/or injured animals
• Attends Community events to share information about animal safety, animal care, and adoptions
• Works closely with City Veterinarian to ensure proper health of animals
• Monitors, maintains accountability, and collects monies received in the adoption of unclaimed animals, city licensing, impounds, cremations, and donations
• Answers questions regarding the licensing, impounding, adoption, and disposal of animals
• Directs the feeding, care, and general handling of animals at the Animal Shelter
• Supervises the maintenance and upkeep of Animal Shelter buildings, equipment, vehicles, and grounds
• Maintains the shelters schedule and policy manual
• Coordinates maintenance on shelter equipment and community outreach events
• Maintains records of expenditures, equipment usage, and material usage
• Manages Animal Shelter social media
• Operates Department vehicles to transport animals if needed
• Fills in for Animal Shelter staff as needed
• Performs essential functions of other Animal Shelter staff as needed or assigned by the Police Captain, at the direction of the Police Chief
• Selects, supervises, directs, and evaluates staff
• Enforces compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Complies with all organizational and departmental policies
• Operates required equipment/tools
• Manages the accountability of animals captured by the Nuisance Animal Officer for payment by the city
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information (oral, written, or electronic)
• Consistent and reliable attendance is required; employees must report to work regularly, on time, and in accordance with their assigned schedule
• Maintains all equipment in a safe manner and makes suggestions for improvement
Position Requirements and Qualifications
Education / Experience requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or Administration preferred
• Continuing education in Animal Science and/or Services
• 5 years of Animal Shelter and/or Animal Shelter related experience preferred
• Supervisory related experience preferred
Licenses / Certifications:
• Valid state of Kansas driver’s license
• Member of the Kansas Animal Control Association
• Animal Control Officer Certification
