Job Summary
Responsible for protecting the lives and property of the citizens by performing fire suppression, technical rescues, hazardous materials responses and providing emergency medical care for the City of McPherson. The position offers a hourly wage range of $19.27–$30.46, depending on qualifications and experience.
Job Competencies and Essential Job Functions

• Performs fire suppression techniques
• Performs rescue operations including high angle, confined spaces, and vehicle extrications
• Responds to the release of hazardous materials in the community
• Provides emergency medical care for the sick and injured
• Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and minor repairs to Fire Department equipment
• Works within the guidelines of the department’s standard operating policies and procedures
• Participates in daily training activities
• Assists with public education programs
• Acts in a safe manner during emergency responses, at the Fire Station, and during training drills
• Assists the Fire Officers in performing fire inspections / pre-planning
• Assumes responsibility for maintaining Fire Station and grounds
• Maintains department records as needed
• Checks and tests fire hydrants
• Performs hose testing and UL pump tests
• Enforces compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Complies with all organizational and departmental policies
• Operates required equipment/tools
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information (oral, written, or electronic)
• Consistent and reliable attendance is required; employees must report to work regularly, on time, and in accordance with their assigned schedule
Position Requirements and Qualifications

Education / Experience requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Technical degree or some college credit in Fire Science including an Associate of Applied Science Degree preferred
Licenses / Certifications:
• Completion of ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 within 6 months of hire
• Emergency Medical Technician (Kansas Board of EMS) Firefighter I and II (IFSAC or Pro Board), Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations (IFSAC or Pro Board) within one year of hire
• Hazardous Materials Technician certification and be Fire Driver Operator certified within eighteen months of hire
• Valid non-commercial Class B Kansas Driver’s License and maintain a good driving record
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Thorough knowledge of firefighting techniques
• Ability to operate all hydraulic equipment, saws and generators
• Proficient with the use of rope rescue techniques and competent in the delivery of emergency medical treatment
• Working knowledge of city geography and fire-flow hydraulics
