Job Summary

Responsible for the installation and maintenance of all city streets, alleys and storm water collection systems for the City of McPherson.

Job Competencies and Essential Job Functions

Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. · Leads, plans, trains, and reviews the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of duties in support of the Streets Section operations and services including those involved in constructing, repairing, installing, maintaining, and cleaning streets, and channel maintenance systems

· Participates in performing complex maintenance assignments as well as administrative support duties

· Trains assigned employees in their areas of work including construction, maintenance, and repair methods, procedures, and techniques

· Oversees and participates in the use, care and operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment

· Performs minor adjustments and emergency repairs to assigned equipment

· Cleans, maintains, and properly stores tools and equipment

· Uses Chemicals and other supplies as required.

· Inspects and evaluates potential job sites to determine the resources necessary for project completion

· Estimates time, materials, and equipment required for the job assigned and requisitions materials as required

· Prepares and maintains records and reports of work performed

· Reads, interprets, and explains directions, construction sketches and equipment manuals

· Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provides information within the area of assignment

· Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed

· Constructs and repairs curbs and gutters by excavating with pneumatic and hand tools, building forms, mixing, placing and finishing concrete

· Patches streets and assists in paving streets and alleys

· Places traffic control devices and warning signs in accordance with the MUTCD and monitors traffic flow

· Installs and maintains street signs

· Paints roadway traffic striping, pavement legends, crosswalks, and curbs using airless paint sprayer and street striper

· Cleans, maintains and stores painting equipment

· Cleans storm drains, drainage ditches, and culverts

· Provides and participates in emergency responses which may include traffic control for extended periods, continual and strenuous sandbagging, emergency repairs to public facilities, assisting with evacuations and other

· Assists with cost estimation for projects

· Selects, supervises, directs, and evaluates staff

· Assists with handling employee concerns, disciplinary actions, and performance evaluations

· Enforces compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

· Complies with all organizational and departmental policies.

· Operates required equipment/tools.

· Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information (oral, written, or electronic).

· Consistent and reliable attendance is required; employees must report to work regularly, on time, and in accordance with their assigned schedule

Position Requirements and Qualifications

Compensation:

$23.41-33.69 per hour

Education / Experience requirements:

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Continuing education in related field

· Four years of Public Works construction and maintenance or similar experience

· One year of supervisory experience

Licenses / Certifications:

· Valid Class B Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and maintain a good driving record

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Individuals in these roles are often exposed to loud noises, heavy machinery, dust, and other environmental factors, requiring the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). The physical demands are significant and may include frequent lifting (up to 50 pounds or more), bending, climbing, standing for long periods, and operating tools or equipment. These roles require stamina, coordination, and awareness of safety procedures to perform tasks effectively and safely.
