Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Cemetery Sexton, the Cemetery Maintenance is a non-exempt position under FLSA, which performs semi-skilled and unskilled duties. This position operates department equipment, assists with the maintenance of the Cemetery grounds and facilities, and performs grounds keeping duties. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude and general equipment repair for automotive, tractor, commercial mowers and small hand equipment (i.e., string trimmers and chain saws). It is also important to possess effective communication and public relation skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

·         Maintains and repairs department machinery and equipment.

·         Operates necessary department machinery and equipment including but not limited to trucks, backhoe, miscellaneous tractors, mowers, string trimmers and various hand tools.

·         Ability to carry heavy objects, bending, kneeling, ladder climbing, and extensive walking while carrying equipment including but not limited to string trimmers and blowers.

·         Strong organizational skills, with ability to follow multipart directions.

·         Willingness to take and complete educational training classes in related fields.

·         Assist with turf, shrub, and flower planting maintenance.

·         Assist with the application of herbicides and pesticides and general knowledge of both would be desired.

·         Assists Public with location of cemetery spaces.

·         Performs grave preparation, both opening and closing.

·         Assists with snow removal.

·         Assist Cemetery Sexton with providing customer service functions of the job including but not limited to sale of cemetery spaces, working with citizens on burial arrangements, other functions associated with assisting the public.

·         Assists in the training of new personnel including but not limited to temporary and seasonal employees.

·         Follows department policies and procedures.

·         Follows safety procedures and practices.

·         Regular attendance is required.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

·         Assists with Memorial Day activities.

·         Assist with the maintenance of cemetery trees, shrubs and plants.

·         Assists Cemetery Sexton in maintaining various written and digital records.

·         Operates manual shift vehicles and equipment.

·         Performs necessary janitorial duties in buildings of the cemetery.

·         Assists other departments as needed.

·         Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

 

CEMETERY MAINTENANCE

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience: One to three years of similar or related experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well and obtain advanced skills and knowledge within six months to one year of employment.

Education:  A high school diploma or GED is required. This employee must have a valid Kansas Driver’s License (KDL) and have and maintain a good driving record.

Technical Skills: A working knowledge of equipment maintenance, safety and procedures is required. This employee must be able to operate backhoes, miscellaneous tractors, mowers, trimmers, hand tools, and other department equipment. The ability to judge distances, to maintain equipment, and to read and interpret written instructions, manuals, diagrams, and schematics is required. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and effective public relation, oral and written communication skills.

Problem Solving: Limited problem solving is involved in this position. This employee encounters problems with equipment malfunctions, and lack of time.

Decision Making: Limited decision-making is involved in this position. This employee makes decisions about operating and maintaining department equipment and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.

Supervision:  This employee works with frequent supervision from the Cemetery Sexton. This employee may exercise supervision over temporary or seasonal subordinate personnel.

Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for department resources and equipment. This employee does not participate in the annual budget process.

Personal Relations:  Ability to adjust work schedule to the needs of the department, including working overtime or weekends on short notice. Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, and supervisory personnel, and occasional contact with the organization’s governing body is expected.

Working Conditions: Some adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to adverse weather conditions, heights, heavy machinery, and excessive noise is expected.

Physical Requirements: Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, bending, kneeling, climbing, extensive walking, and the ability to operate departmental equipment is required daily in this position.

Residential Requirements: Must obtain residency within fifteen miles of the city limits of McPherson within agreed upon time frame
