Position Description: Parks and Public Facilities Maintenance Worker

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Parks & Recreation Director and some general supervision from the Public Works Director, this employee performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work operations in the maintenance and improvement of parks, public properties, public buildings and facilities, swimming pool, natural areas, sidewalks, and trails, to maintain a safe, clean and user- friendly environment for public properties, green spaces, and public buildings.

Essential Functions

·         Monitors and maintains general maintenance, appearance, and functionality of all city parks, public properties and green spaces, public buildings and facilities, including the municipal swimming pool ensuring city and public assets are well                maintained

·         Assists with mowing, trimming, edging, and clean-up of public parks and land according to established schedules and acceptable standards

·         Assists with operation and maintenance of various departmental equipment or vehicles

·         Completes inspections of parks and public buildings, noting and correcting issues such as cleaning needs, trash or litter removal, repair or remediation of vandalism, vegetation management, addressing safety issues on playground equipment or    cause them to be repaired, landscaping maintenance, irrigation system maintenance or manual watering needs as necessary, minor grading or dirt work, and other general upkeep functions

·         Performs maintenance and repair tasks on public buildings and facilities, including both exterior and interior areas, such as lighting and ballast replacement, minor maintenance tasks that may be related to roofing, plumbing, electrical, carpentry,      painting, building and moving furniture, snow and ice removal, and other general maintenance needs or tasks

·         Assists with general maintenance needs of equipment and vehicles, ensuring preventative and general maintenance is performed as scheduled and records are maintained, troubleshooting and repairing minor or small mechanical issues, and that  equipment is kept in safe, clean, and usable status as much as possible

·         Follow safety and security protocols for performance of job and operation of equipment

·         Keep work areas clean, neat, and organized

Marginal Functions

·         Make recommendations to Parks and Recreation Director or Public Works Director regarding equipment maintenance or purchase, needed maintenance or repairs for public facilities/buildings

·         May perform some general clerical duties, including typing, filing, photocopying, or other office tasks

·         Assist Public Works Department or Wedgewood Golf Course on specified projects

·         Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned

Position Requirements

Experience: One to three years of similar or related experience is preferred. Experience with small engine repair, irrigation, operation of light equipment, general building maintenance or construction is desired. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months to one year of employment.

Education: A high school diploma or GED is preferred. The ability to read and interpret manuals, schedules, maps, or written instructions is needed. A valid driver’s license is required. Acceptable oral and written communication skills are needed.

Technical Skills: A general knowledge of computer and/or tablet use and operation of general office equipment is needed. This employee must be able to understand and operate equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, motor vehicles, trailers, skid steer, tractors, pumps, a variety of electric or gas-powered hand tools related to position’s job responsibilities routinely.  

Problem Solving: Problem solving is a factor in this position. This employee may encounter challenges in multiple areas that will require collaboration with other co-workers to resolve.

Decision Making: Decision making is a factor in this position. As needed, this employee makes decisions about resolving communication issues, prioritizing assigned work tasks, pursuing repairs of equipment, and choosing appropriate supplies or tools for jobs or tasks. It is expected that this employee makes efficient used of city resources including financial, time, and equipment needs.

Supervision: This employee works under the direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director. This employee does not exercise any supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.

Financial Accountability: This employee has limited responsibility for city resources. This employee does not generally participate in the annual budget process.

Personal Relations: Regular contact with the public, co-workers, supervisory personnel should be expected and occasional contact with the organization's governing body or others may be required.

Working Conditions: This position is expected to work both indoors and outdoors, although outdoors will be more common generally. Occasionally, adverse working conditions may exist within this position and exposure to all types of weather conditions including extreme heat or cold, chemicals, waste, weeds, grass, machinery, noise, heights, slopes, water, mud, confined or enclosed spaces, working along streets, and amongst the public can be expected.

Physical Requirements: Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy loads, extensive walking, bending, reaching, climbing, stooping, twisting, balancing, and kneeling and the ability to operate including getting into and out of departmental equipment may be required daily in this position.
