The fundamental reason this classification exists is to administer the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS). This position is responsible for data collection, creation of mapping and maintenance of the GIS software. The coordinator works with City departments, planners, engineers to integrate data and assist in projects. The position is supervised by the Building Official.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Data collection and entry: Collect, enter, and update geographic data into GIS databases, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
· Map creation and maintenance: Produce and maintain detailed maps and spatial data visualizations using GIS software, tailored to specific project requirements.
· Data analysis: Perform spatial analysis to interpret geographic data, identify trends, and provide insights to support decision-making processes.
· Database management: Maintain and manage GIS databases, including data quality control, organization, and documentation of metadata.
· Technical support: Provide technical assistance to users of GIS applications, including troubleshooting issues and offering guidance on best practices
· Report generation: Generate reports, charts, and other visual representations of GIS data to communicate findings to stakeholders.
· Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams, including urban planners, engineers, and city departments, to integrate GIS data into broader projects
· Software and tool utilization: Utilize a variety of GIS software and tools, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and GPS technology, to complete tasks efficiently.
· Project documentation: Document project workflows, methodologies, and results for future reference and compliance purposes.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- GIS concepts and applications
- Experience with the ESRI software suite required - ArcGIS Pro, Online, and Field Maps
- AutoCAD or other drafting software
- Utility networks
- Cadastral concepts
- MS Office applications – Primarily Word and Excel
- Adobe Acrobat
- Basic understanding of city planning, neighborhood and economic development, floodplains, and city code is considered useful
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Sit in an office setting for long periods of time.
- Establish priorities for own workload based upon such factors as the need for immediate action and work objectives.
- Understand and comply with oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Communicate orally with co-workers in face-to-face one-on-one settings, or using a telephone or two-way radio.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Work Environment:
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Sitting for extended periods of time
- Exposure to computer screens
Additional Requirements:
· Position requires strong computer and technology skills and abilities
- Position requires the use of City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have/maintain an acceptable driving record.
· Subject to a background check.
Education and Experience
A Two-year associate’s degree in geography, drafting, environmental science, information technology, or a related field is required, Bachelor’s degree preferred. A Minimum of one but preferably at least two years of experience working with GIS products.
Work Schedule:
7:30 AM - 5:30 PM Monday through Thursday with an alternating half-day (4 hours), every-other Friday, or as needed.
