Additional Information
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK
- Oversee the reviews and issuance building permits, occupancy certificates, contractor licenses and zoning permits
- Oversee the enforcement of the City’s building, property maintenance, nuisance and zoning codes, the Americans with Disabilities Act and other ordinances pertaining to construction and building trades
- Lead the review of building permit applications, conduct plan reviews and the inspection of public and private buildings to ensure compliance with building codes and other regulatory requirements
- Provide both written and oral interpretations of the building codes and other regulatory requirements
- Research and maintain knowledge of new code changes, new materials available and new methods of construction
- Provide staff support to various boards, committees and commissions, including but not limited to: City Council and Board of Building Code Appeals
- Assist with the enforcement of the zoning regulations and site plan review standards through inspection of public and private buildings and/or sites
- Supervision of Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer, and Permit Technician. Makes employment-related decisions involving hiring, discipline, and status changes including performance reviews of subordinate employees.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of building codes, plumbing codes, mechanical codes, electrical codes, property maintenance codes, nuisance codes and zoning regulations
- Knowledge about construction materials and methods
- Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public and to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing
- Ability to read and understand construction plans, specifications, and blueprints
- Ability to solve problems using a balance of technical competence, creativity and research
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required
- Some Post-Secondary courses in building, construction, inspection, or related field, preferred
- Four years’ progressive experience in building trades, or related, preferred
- International Code Council B1, B2, B3, E1, M1 and P1 certifications required.
- International Code Council CBO certification required within 12 months
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, or push heavy (50 lb. or more) objects
- Frequently involves climbing in and out basements, crawl spaces, sewer and line ditches, manholes, attics, roofs, etc. Also requires frequent bending or stooping.
