Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Noxious Weeds Director, the Chemical Applicator I/Assistant performs skilled and semi-skilled manual work in the control and eradication of noxious weeds on county, state, township, and private properties. This position will also include mowing, weed-eating, and general cemetery maintenance of the grounds. Work involves operating a variety of light, specialized equipment and performing related manual tasks. Must have a valid Kansas driver's license. Work is subject to review by the Noxious Weeds Director.

 

Essential Functions

·       Operates a variety of equipment including trucks, weed sprayers, pick up trucks, ATV’s, tractors and mower.

·       Performs job related manual tasks;

·       Prepares and sprays chemical solutions

·       Patrols designated areas in order to locate noxious weeds;

·       Unloads and loads chemicals off and on trucks;

·       Performs general maintenance on equipment including refueling, changing oil, lubricating parts: making minor adjustments as necessary. 

·       Sells chemicals to local citizens;

·       Completes forms and reports as required.

·       Operate a variety of hand tools, shovel, hoes, rakes and saws

·       Other duties as assigned
 

Marginal Functions

·       Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned;

·       Attends training seminars and classes as required by the Noxious Weeds Director ;

·       May be required to cross train in other suitable county departments.

·       Assists with maintenance of Sumner County Cemetery

·       Abide by all standards, conduct and policies, as stated in Employee Handbook.

·       Ensure the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools before and after use.

 

Position Requirements

Experience: Minimum experience in chemical applications or experience through agriculture education/employment is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.

Education: High school diploma or GED preferred. Valid Kansas driver’s license required. Within two weeks of employment must obtain a private applicator permit.

Technical Skills: Basic mathematical aptitude is required. The ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to proficiently and safely operate various pieces of equipment used in the eradication of noxious weeds. Ability to deal tactfully with other persons and to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing. Technical knowledge of chemical applications, ability to identify weeds, and read a map helpful.

Problem Solving: Must be able to determine best method for performing the assigned task. Decisions made in the position include judging the types of chemicals to use and the best conditions and time for application.

Decision Making: Must be able to determine factors and environmental elements which may cause problems with chemical spraying.

Supervision: Limited direct supervision provided relating to daily job functions. Work performance reviewed for general procedures and accuracy. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.

Financial Accountability: Employee is accountable for the proper collection and recording of fees relating to the sale of chemicals to the public.

Personal Relations: Frequent contact with other county departments and the general public.

Working Conditions: Some hazardous working conditions may exist in this position relating to the handling of chemicals. Extreme weather conditions, chemicals, and toxic fumes are factors in this position. Some overtime hours overtime hours occasionally required.

Physical requirements: To perform the duties of this job, the employee must have fine and gross manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to seventy (70) pounds. Ability to walk, bend, stoop, kneel and climb ladders and/or stairs.
