Thank you for your interest in employment with the City of Derby. By submitting your application for any position with the City of Derby, you understand and agree to the following statements:

You represent and warrant that the content of your application is true, to the best of your knowledge and belief; and that falsification, misrepresentation or omission of information could be just cause for dismissal at any time.

You understand that you may be required to complete relevant employment testing, for the purpose of determining your capability of performing the duties of the position.

 If you are selected for employment with the City of Derby, you agree to participate in the appropriate examinations, determined by the position, which would include pre-employment physical examination and drug screening, and could include polygraph, psychological, and physical endurance examinations as well. These examinations will be paid for entirely by the City of Derby. Costs of transportation and time involved in completing the examinations are the responsibility of the applicant.


The City of Derby provides the following benefits for full-time (minimum 30 hours per week) employees.

Vacation Leave - Employees accrue vacation leave based on their number of years of service.

Sick Leave - Employees working 36-40 hours per week accrue 3.7 hours of sick leave bi-weekly. Employees working 56 hours per week accrue 5.17 hours bi-weekly.

Holidays - The City provides 11 paid holidays.

Medical Insurance - Health insurance is provided through the City of Derby's self-funded insurance plan and Dental Insurance is provided through Delta Dental of Kansas. The City of Derby can pay up to 85% of the premium cost for both health and dental insurance. Coverage for these plans begins the first day of the calendar month following one full calendar month of employment. Rates vary based on coverage selection.

Retirement - The City provides Kansas Public Employer’s Retirement System (KPERS) and Kansas Police and Fire (KP&F) Retirement Programs.

Deferred Compensation - Optional retirement savings program is available to employees.

Tuition Reimbursement - The City of Derby provides a tuition reimbursement program for approved continuing education courses.

Wellness Program - A wellness program complete with annual health risk assessments, biometric screenings, and flu shots are available to employees. Full-time employees are also eligible for discounted memberships to the Derby Recreation Center and the YMCA.

Performance Pay Increases - Employees have an opportunity for a merit increase based on annual performance reviews.

Life Insurance - Life insurance in the amount of 150% of the employee’s annual salary is provided through KPERS and KP&F.

Optional Group Life Insurance - Optional group life insurance is available to employees.

Other Optional Insurance - Additional optional insurance is available to employees, including cancer, accident, short-term disability, and other plans.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - The EAP provides confidential, professional consultation for assistance in resolving personal issues. This free service is available to full- and regular part-time employees beginning on their first day of employment. Employees may voluntarily seek the services of the EAP as needed.

Flexible Spending Accounts – Full time employees are eligible to participate in Medical and Dependent Care Spending Accounts.

Alternative Work Schedule - Employees in nonpublic safety positions are able to request variations to their individual schedules.

Nepotism Policy
The City of Derby prohibits the hiring of spouses and/or immediate family members within the same department, but not within the City structure. Immediate family is defined as an employee’s father, mother, wife, husband, children, sister, brother, grandparents, grandchildren, step-parents, step-children, mother or father-in law, brothers or sisters-in law, aunt or uncle, and niece or nephew.

Drug Free Workplace
The City of Derby is committed to a Drug-Free Workplace. We conduct pre-employment, post- employment, post-accident, based on reasonable suspicion, and random drug testing. Applicants who refuse to be tested, test positive, or tamper with the test will not be eligible for employment. Completion of an application does not constitute an employment contract or an offer of employment.

At-Will Employment
Employment with the City of Derby is considered “at-will”. Nothing contained within the City’s applications, advertisement process, or the personnel manual constitute an employment contract.
